How has "The Rec" gone green?
In 2009 the Student Recreation Center began the long journey of a complete renovation. Two years later, the renovation is complete, and keeping with our tradition of sustainability, Colorado State University now boasts one of the "greenest" recreation facilities around. Here is a list of features that contribute to the sustainability of this great facility.
- Purchase "green" power
- Use of Low Emitting Materials
- Adhesives
- Sealants
- Paint & coatings
- Carpeting and carpet adhesives
- Composite wood
- Agrifiber products
- Energy reducing lighting and thermal controls
- Installation of motion sensors to reduce night time light pollution
- Re-use of over 75% of existing structural walls, floors and roofs
- Water efficient landscaping and 100% use of non-potable water
- Significant water use reduction within the building. 20%-30% water use reduction
- Minimum of a 21% reduction in energy usage
- High performance glass
- Insulation
- Proper solar orientation
- Shading
- High performance equipment
- High performance boilers (92% efficient)
- Water cooled chillers
- Recycle approximately 75% of our construction waste - reducing the amounts that go to landfills
- The pool is part of comprehensive sustainable design package that was used for the entire Rec Center renovation and resulted in LEED-Gold certification of the facility.
- Energy conservation was improved via improved insulation in the roof as well as high-efficiency HVAC systems and water heaters.
- The water filters chosen use regenerative media in lieu of traditional media such as sand. As a result of this choice, the amount of water required for pool maintenance has been reduced by thousands of gallons annually.
- Finally, low VOC paints, regionally produced materials and recycled content were strategies that were also employed to achieve the overall goal of sustainability.
