General

The various types of Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid classes are open to CSU students only.  However, the Lifeguard training courses are open to the local community.  Please read descriptions below for more information on what kind of certification is included with each class type.

Certification

Certification is not guaranteed.  All participants must pass a written and practical exam.  Refunds are not given if participants do not pass the class.  For the pretest that is a part of the Lifeguard Training courses only, participants that fail the pretest will not be allowed to continue with the course but will receive a refund (minus the processing fee).

Registration

Please register at the Service Center desk in the lobby of the Rec Center.  Please bring the activity number and date of the class you want to register for so you are enrolled in the correct section.  Classes that do not hit minimum enrollment will be canceled.  All participants will receive a full refund if the class is canceled for enrollment reasons.

Refunds

Refund requests are accepted at the Service Desk.  They must be submitted on or before 5pm two** business days before the first class session.  All refunds are assessed a $5 processing fee. Late registration fees will not be refunded.  **Lifeguarding class refunds must be submitted by 5pm five business days before the first class session.

Equipment

Pocket masks are required for all CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Lifeguarding courses.  Participants that do not have a personal pocket mask must pay for one during class registration.  Purchased masks are provided in the classroom on the first day.

Location

Classes are primarily held in the Rec Center in Room AB however some may be located at other buildings on campus.  Please see your receipt for additional details regarding class locations.  Drinks and small snacks are okay to consume in the classroom (meal breaks are not given during classes).

Course Content

First Aid
Topics covered include: handling emergency situations; basic disease transmission precautions; recognizing and caring for bleeding, wounds, burns, sudden illnesses, stroke, seizures, bites, poisoning and heat- and cold-related emergencies; and immobilizing muscle, bone and joint injuries.  First aid classes do not include information on breathing or cardiac emergencies.  This certification lasts for 2 years.

Lay Adult CPR & AED
Topics covered include: recognizing and handling emergency situations; caring for breathing and cardiac emergencies; performing CPR on adults and using an AED on victims of sudden cardiac arrest until advanced medical help is available.  This certification lasts for 2 years.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
Target audience: public safety personnel, lifeguards, emergency response team members, first aid station workers, health care professionals, and athletic trainers.

Topics covered include: recognizing and handling breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants; two-rescuer CPR; use of resuscitation mask and bag-valve-mask; and using an AED on victims of sudden cardiac arrest.  This certification lasts for 2 years.

Lifeguarding
Prerequisite: 15 years of age and older.

Topics covered include: professionalism; surveillance; victim recognition; equipment-based rescues; and caring for head, neck and back injuries.  Participants that pass the lifeguarding course will be certified in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Training, and First Aid.  This certification lasts for 2 years (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer) and 3 years (Lifeguard Training and First Aid).
